A cut-off value is the threshold above which a test counts as positive. If the measured concentration is below it, the result is called negative, even though a trace is present. The cut-off prevents very low, non-relevant amounts from already giving a positive result.
What does a cut-off value mean?
Each substance has an agreed cut-off, often in nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL). The screen compares the measured value with that threshold. A value just below the cut-off is formally negative; a value above it is positive and is confirmed by a lab with a specific method.
Why the cut-off matters
The cut-off determines how sensitive a test is and when something counts. A quantified lab value shows how far you are from the threshold, which gives more grip than a line. More context is at which drug test fits you and home test versus lab test.
