With GHB one thing counts above all: speed. Whoever wants to know on Monday morning whether a test from Saturday night still shows anything is almost always too late. GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) is largely broken down by the body within a few hours, which makes the window in which the substance is detectable exceptionally short. That makes the timing of a test more important than for any other substance.

How long is GHB detectable?
GHB occurs naturally in the body in low amounts, which makes interpretation extra difficult: a laboratory therefore works with a threshold above that natural background. That short window has a practical downside. Whoever only arranges a test the morning after a possible exposure often discovers there is nothing left to measure. It is one of the few substances where a delay of a few hours makes the difference between a usable and a worthless result. Also bear in mind that a test for GHB is something other than a test for its medicinal form; the interpretation differs and should always be viewed in context with a doctor.
Why timing decides everything
A test taken too late can detect nothing with GHB, even after clear use. Blood and saliva close the window even faster than urine. Whoever wants GHB measured must therefore act within hours, not within days. This is exactly the opposite of a hair test, which instead looks back months but is barely usable for GHB.
What the short window means in practice
The rapid breakdown of GHB has consequences that reach further than just the time of collection. The natural background as a challenge
GHB is not a fully foreign substance to the body. The body produces small amounts itself, and that natural background makes interpretation harder than for most other substances. A laboratory therefore uses a threshold clearly above that natural level, so a normal body value is not mistaken for use. What the short breakdown means for your test
- Speed above all. The sooner after the suspected use, the greater the chance the substance is still above the threshold.
- A negative result proves little. Outside the window, "nothing found" says nothing about earlier use.
- Choose a targeted lab measurement. Standard strips do not measure GHB reliably; a lab sets the value against the natural background.
