The short window of 6-MAM is no coincidence. This substance, in full 6-monoacetylmorphine, only forms from heroin and disappears within a few hours. If 6-MAM is found, that points specifically to heroin use. If only morphine is found, the source could just as easily be a morphine-containing medicine or even poppy seed.
Why a positive opiate test does not always mean heroin
An opiate screening reacts to the whole group at once. That is set deliberately wide, so it misses little. The downside is that a first positive result does not tell you which substance caused it. Poppy seed on a roll, for example, can release enough morphine and codeine to trigger a sensitive screening, without any drug use. Drinking a lot of water does not reliably shorten the window.
